
Repertoire
Group I (Uusimaa region, contestants up to 11 years of age)
Maximum duration 10 minutes.
The repertoire must include:
Music by a composer born before the year 1785
Music in a fast tempo
Otherwise the program can be freely chosen. The organizing committee strongly recommends including works composed also by non-male composers.
Video selection: If the number of applicants is too large in terms of the competition schedule, the organizer will limit the number of the participants. For the video selection, the applicants must submit a link (e.g., Youtube, Dropbox, etc.) to a video containing one solo work. The work doesn’t have to a part of the actual competition repertoire.
Group II (Uusimaa region, contestants aged 12–15)
Maximum duration 15 minutes.
The repertoire must include:
Music by a composer born before the year 1785
Music in a fast tempo
A Finnish composition
Otherwise the program can be freely chosen. The organizing committee strongly recommends including works composed also by non-male composers.
Video selection: If the number of applicants is too large in terms of the competition schedule, the organizer will limit the number of the participants. For the video selection, the applicants must submit a link (e.g., YouTube, Dropbox, etc.) to a video containing one solo work. The work doesn’t have to a be part of the actual competition repertoire.
Group III (international, up to 15 years of age)
Video Selection: Along with the application form, the applicants must submit a link (e.g. YouTube, Dropbox, etc.) to a video containing two works that meet the following criteria:
At least one work must be part of the actual competition repertoire.
At least one work must be in a fast tempo.
The total duration of the video must not exceed 10 minutes.
The works must be solo works.
First round (maximum duration 15 minutes)
Music by a composer born before the year 1700
A work by a Finnish composer*, composed in 2000 or later
One or more works of free choice
* Further information about Finnish composers: core.musicfinland.fi. See examples of Finnish piano compositions here. Works by foreign composers permanently residing in Finland are also accepted.
Second round (maximum duration 20 minutes)
One or more works of free choice
One or more movements from a free-choice piano trio by Joseph Haydn, including at least one movement in fast tempo (first movement or finale)
The Haydn Piano Trio movement will be performed with a violinist and cellist provided by the competition organizer.
The contestant’s free-choice repertoire may include an improvisation or an original composition by the contestant. Contestant may decide the order of performance for the required works.
Additional Notes
- The organizing committee strongly recommends including works composed by non-male composers.
- Competition prizes will be awarded in categories according to the repertoire requirements. A work by a non-male composer will be considered as one of these categories, even though it is not mandatory.
